For generations, the Toreno family has devoted themselves to their humble land, transforming it into a thriving farm that helps feed Filipino families. As a third-generation paddy rice farmer, Roberto Toreno balanced his studies with supporting the family business from the age of six.
At 13, he became an apprentice to a paddy rice agent, learning the trade through daily hands-on experience. After high school, he worked full-time as an agent in Leganes, serving clients all across the Iloilo province. By age 23, armed with savings and confidence in his skills, he established his own paddy rice-buying station.
As his business grew, Roberto expanded into the milled rice industry by opening a retail and wholesale rice store. Guided by his belief that “Kung gutom ang mga manguguma, gutom man ang mga tawo” (“If the farmers are hungry, the people are hungry”), he remained committed to supporting farmers and giving back to his country through his work.
The average Filipino consumes 3 cups of rice a day; that's approximately 17.7 billion kilograms of rice per year! However, the Philippines only produces around 12 billion kilograms of rice a year. Unable to meet domestic demand, we have to rely on imports to meet our needs On average, we import 3.8 billion kilograms of rice a year, and that figure has been rising steadily. We are expecting to import over 5 billion kilograms by the end of 2026!
The increase in imports has affected our economy. Farmers are struggling to continue operating amid high demand for cheaper rice, but we found a way to keep rice affordable while still providing our farmers with the resources they need to flourish. That is why our vision is to give our local farmers a foundation to build on so that our country can prosper once again.
Not every seed grows into a plant—that is why every seed counts.
Today, approximately 800,000 children under the age of five suffer from severe acute malnutrition.
Just as the Toreno family has passed down their values from generation to generation, they remain committed to building a future where no Filipino goes hungry.
Join us in creating a better future for our children. Your support can make a lasting impact on the communities they call home and help sow the seeds of a hunger-free tomorrow.
